Mass Loaded Vinyl is an old-fashioned sound blocker. While there are many trade names for this material, all are a simple PVC sheet, loaded with Barium Sulfate or gypsum powder to add weight. Mass Loaded Vinyl is very dense, weighing one pound per square foot.
This mass is what allows the MLV to be somewhat effective at reducing airborne noise.
We do not recommend the use of MLV in walls, floors, and ceilings. Years ago, before new technology, MLV was a standard in sound isolation designs. Today there are lower cost, higher performance materials that are recommended for walls and ceilings, such as Green Glue or Sound Isolation Clips. MLV still has utility in wrapping curved surfaces and adding mass to pipes, ducts, and steel framing members.
Helps in improving acoustic properties by adding mass to walls and ceilings.
Ideal for applications requiring soundproofing and acoustic performance.
Effective in areas where noise reduction and sound absorption are critical.
